Every week brings another "next big thing." We're more interested in what actually moves the needle.
The 50-and-older travelers are far from slowing down—they're booking the trips, filling the rooms and driving one of America's biggest economic shifts. The AI hiccup that could send would-be guests somewhere else. And the simple stay checklist that's earning outsized marks for guest satisfaction.
Different headlines, same lesson: the future belongs to the operators who know which shifts are worth acting on.
And in your inbox tomorrow: A Mint Pillow Q&A with Philip Bates, CEO of TMC Hospitality, on why wellness has little to do with spa menus and everything to do with thoughtful design.

QUICK CLICKS
Mews is making AI moves. Mews just cut 15% of its staff while restructuring around an AI-first future, betting that hotel software—and the teams building it—will look very different in a few years. Whether you use Mews or not, the message for hoteliers is clear: the companies behind your tech stack are already rethinking the future of operations.
⚾️ Moneyball for hotels. Baseball figured out long ago that batting average doesn't tell the whole story, and “Signals From the Built World” authors Jeffrey Horwitz and Yuval Tal think it’s time RevPAR got the same treatment. If you’re only measuring what happened instead of what should have happened, you’re probably leaving runs—and revenue—on the field.
Your partners are (also) the product. Are your best local collaborators buried in a concierge list? If so, you’re abandoning your biggest differentiator. Some travel brands are building entire experiences around local business owners—a compelling reminder that guests remember the people they meet as much as the places they stay.
What the first-party data conversation keeps missing. “Guests aren’t opposed to sharing information,” says hospitality marketing leader Sarah Stahl. “They're opposed to sharing information that serves no purpose.”
Between intention and reality. The emotional labor of DIY travel (and a case for keeping things human).

SPACE & DESIGN

The courtyard sanctuary
Tucked away in Mallorca’s historic old town, Palma Riad borrows architectural genius from North African history to build a secluded urban oasis. The hotel layout centers entirely on a traditional Moroccan riad structure, pulling all attention inward toward a central open-air courtyard. By blocking out the surrounding city streets, the layout creates an intimate world focused entirely on rich textures and dramatic lighting.
Why it matters: By mixing moody medieval features with bold North African wallpaper and custom dark wood accents, Palma Riad creates a world in itself. This inward-facing design allows the property to ditch standard Mediterranean minimalism and offer a completely distinct, immersive guest experience. (Forbes)

REVENUE & INVESTMENTS
“We believe the longevity economy will be one of the defining forces shaping America’s future.”
The $12.5 trillion check-in
Here's a number worth bookmarking: Households headed by adults 50-plus spent $10.7 trillion in 2024, representing more than half of all U.S. consumer spending (read that again). That direct spending is projected to reach $22 trillion by 2060, creating a long runway for hotels that understand how this audience travels and spends.
Why it matters: When you factor in their workforce contributions and broader ripple effects, this demographic generates an incredible $12.5 trillion in total annual economic activity, according to recent AARP research. This growing customer base offers a lucrative way to increase revenue through longer-term demand, especially for properties that align their guest experience with evolving travel preferences instead of relying on outdated, age-based assumptions. GUEST EXPERIENCE
The new “need-to-have” checklist
Even with average daily rates creeping up across the country, travelers are reporting a major boost in overall stay satisfaction. The newly released 2026 J.D. Power Index shows that guests feel they are getting significantly better value for their travel dollars this year.
Why it matters: Traveler preferences are shifting rapidly toward wellness and baseline property maintenance, with guests explicitly identifying daily housekeeping, filtered water stations and fitness centers as "need to have" amenities. On top of that, the study notes that physical improvements to guest room decor and furnishings are directly driving higher perceptions of value. As for guest-facing tech, in-room entertainment has evolved, meaning smart TVs with seamless streaming capabilities are now a fundamental expectation. (CX Dive)

TECHNOLOGY
Not a feature; definitely a bug
You might think your distribution strategy is locked down because your reservation partners are plugged into the latest AI ecosystems. However, Skift testing shows that ChatGPT frequently overlooks live travel apps—the crucial digital plug-ins that allow the AI to pull real-time room availability and pricing directly from platforms like Expedia. The system simply drops this direct connection and returns to outdated web results instead of showing actual live inventory, which means relying on AI tools to deliver travelers to your direct booking engine remains a highly unpredictable gamble.
Why it matters: When standard hotel websites break down, they instantly alert your tech team so you can patch the problem. AI platforms don’t register these failed connections, meaning properties lose out on lucrative direct bookings without ever realizing a traveler was steered away. Other AI tools prove this can be fixed, as they easily surface direct booking links and clear carousels without any issues. Indie operators—watch your digital presence closely. You can’t secure direct revenue through a pipeline that hides its own errors. (Hospitality Today)
